Prior to
hurricane Katrina, St.
Bernard Parish, with close in access to the Central Business District of
New Orleans (only five miles form the Orleans Parish line at Arabi), low
crime rates and and one the areas best performing public school systems,
offered the best home values in the New Orleans metro region. Of
Orleans, Jefferson, St. Tammany, St. Charles and Plaquemines Parish offered
the most cost effective housing values in the region according to
the 2000 census. Many residents are trying to return and rebuild held up
by the slow pace of recovery and mitigating factors such as the rebuilding
of the levee system and the lingering effects of the Murphy Oil spill.
Property values for damaged property's are approximately twenty-five percent
of pre-storm values and most remain unoccupied. (Editor's note - above
is a before and after picture of my family's home on Marietta St. in
Chalmette which was "lucky enough" to only have four feet of water.)
